Fox Anchor Joins MI LEGALIZE

MI LEGALIZE 2018 WELCOMES ANQUNETTE "Q" SARFOH TO LEADERSHIP ROLE IN MARIJUANA LEGALIZATION CAMPAIGN

Retired Fox 2 Detroit Morning Anchor, Takes Activist Interest In Advancing Marijuana Law Reform
.
.
NOVEMBER 1, 2016/Detroit: In an announcement made this morning, Anqunette Jamison Sarfoh has declared she is joining the leadership of Michigan's movement to legalize the adult use of marijuana, known as MI Legalize 2018.
.
.
Ms. Sarfoh will be introduced as a member of the organization during a fundraiser being held in Wednesday evening at Weber's Inn Ann Arbor. Those unable to attend can still donate to the new campaign below.
.
Anqunette, or “Q” as many know her, is a noted media personality and an accomplished activist supporting multiple sclerosis research and charities. Her television career has included broadcast positions in multiple states, including the morning anchor at Fox 2 Detroit. Anqunette is currently on a leave of absence from that position due to medical issues related to her multiple sclerosis condition.
.
As a volunteer, Anqunette is a District Activist Leader with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and is also the newest member of the Michigan Chapter’s Government Relations Advisory Committee. Anqunette has participated in MS Action Day in Lansing, the African-Americans with MS conference in Detroit, Walk MS and Muckfest.
.
MILegalize collected more than 350,000 signatures on petitions to place the issue of legalized adult use of marijuana on the 2016 general election ballot. Although the petitions were proper and the filing was timely a series of court challenges prevented the group's proposal from appearing on the November 8 ballot.
.
The group recently announced they have filed a new ballot committee and are preparing an updated version of their 2016 proposal. The citizen initiative process requires approx. 250,000 valid signatures from Michigan voters, and a 2016 law now requires that those signatures be collected within 180 days. MILegalize is welcoming many new interested persons to join the campaign as it builds steam for a spring petition launch. "The MILegalize team is very happy to welcome someone as talented as Anqunette. Her skills and passion are a real asset and we look forward to others joining the cause as we work together to craft a plan to legalize the right way for Michigan," said Executive Director Jeffrey Hank.
.
"I feel the War on Drugs has been a failure. Not only has it stifled research into non-pharmaceutical medicine, and it has led to an incarceration epidemic which has disproportionately affected communities of color. As someone who has experienced the positive effects of using cannabis I feel it is hypocritical to remain quiet and benefit while others suffer in prison for non-violent drug offenses," said Sarfoh. "I want people to know they have a non-pharmaceutical option. I believe responsible adults have the right to enjoy this plant in the same manner as alcohol: with no shame and no fear of prosecution."
.
Anqunette's broadcast career has included stints as a television reporter in Indiana, Nevada, Massachusetts and Michigan.

MILEGALIZE FILES LAWSUIT IN STATE COURT TO CHALLENGE MARIJUANA LEGALIZATION PETITION DENIAL

PRESS RELEASE    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MILEGALIZE FILES LAWSUIT IN STATE COURT TO CHALLENGE MARIJUANA LEGALIZATION PETITION DENIAL
Lawsuit filed in the Court of Claims based on various constitutional claims

June 17, 2016
LANSING- The ballot question committee MILegalize filed a lawsuit today challenging a decision by the Board of State Canvassers (BOSC) to reject 354,000 signatures on the grounds that some of the signatures were "stale," meaning older than 180 days. The cited defendants include Secretary of State Ruth Johnson, the Board of State Canvassers and the Director of the Bureau of Elections, Christopher Thomas.

The filing in the Court of Claims also asks the judge to strike down Public Act 142 of 2016, also known as Senate Bill 776, which was signed into law on May 25 by Governor Rick Snyder.

The Complaint in the case asks for a writ of mandamus, declaratory and injunctive relief. "This action seeks a minimum of at least four immediate rulings and one outcome-- to place the MILegalize proposal on the ballot of the next general election," per the official filing.

On June 1 MILegalize leaders submitted to the Michigan Bureau of Elections over 354,000 signatures from Michigan residents, all secured in support of a petition drive to put the issue on the ballot in the November 2016 general election. More than 5% of all registered voters in the state signed the MILegalize petitions.

Using the guidelines established by the Board, the Bureau recommended the petitions be rejected. The BOSC quickly voted to follow that recommendation, issuing a formal refusal on the grounds of stale signatures.

MILegalize attorneys, led by the organization's Chair, Jeffrey Hank, contend that the law clearly states the period to collect signatures for standard petition drives is the time between gubernatorial elections, and the 180-day policy has only been a valid restriction for Constitutional Amendments.

"This lawsuit is about more than cannabis. It is about the fundamental rights of all Michigan citizens to participate in our own government. We are fighting for the rights of all Michigan voters. The BOSC is enforcing a policy on initiatory petition drives that is improper," said Hank. "Our argument is Obviously, the legislature thought so, too, because they passed a bill to change elections law to stop any petitioning group from ever using the same path we've taken." Attorney Thomas Lavigne added, "MILegalize will be on the ballot. This is one of the most important petitioning rights cases ever filed, and we will vigorously defend Art I, Sec 1, that all political power resides with the People."
The bill was signed by Governor Snyder earlier this year, and seals up the 'loophole' in elections law created by this dual standard of timing for petition signature validity. In their claim, MILegalize attorneys argue that the law itself is unconstitutional and is not valid to enforce a law made in 2016 on a ballot drive that began in 2015.
Both the Brief and the Complaint are extensive and include additional constitutional claims that SB 776 was not properly enacted with immediate effect, and that if it were applied to MILegalize it would be an unlawful regulatory takings. MILegalize in that instance is seeking damages of up to $3 million dollars, plus attorney fees. A case which addresses some of the same issues has already been filed by the Citizens to Ban Fracking in MIchigan; that case is being heard by Hon. Stephen L. Borrello.

MILEGALIZE PETITIONERS GO TO EAST LANSING TOMORROW!!!!!!!

I Could not believe it !
Had to count again.
202 signatures in five hours of actual petitioning.
Please go to the East Lansing art festival tomorrow on Sunday.!!!!
Google it.
It is a Goldmine ...
East Lansing is the most sympathetic city to our cause in Michigan. You could carry a sign and put it down when the line forms. Sometimes I went a few minutes without a signature, but not often, and people signed in groups.
We need to get thousands of signatures out of this art fair we need all our volunteers and professional companies there – but we say this and so few people show up.
This is the time to show up.
Watch our leader Jeff Hank on the Tim Skubic show!! http://video.wkar.org/video/2365759932/
and you will know why we can win.
If you are within an hour or 90 minutes of Lansing please go there tomorrow and get signatures. !!!
New developments have occurred that make me optimistic, actually for the first time.
We really have to harvest this art fair!
Thank you my brothers and sisters,
This is the day to step up to the plate.
Petitioning is tough, but this is as good as it gets
 – you have to get in there and park and get to the site – but it is a great fair, full of our supporters.
I will send $1000 tonight to MILEGALIZE legalize using PayPal on the website,
I hope you will send as much as you can, especially if you can't be there tomorrow petitioning. Thanks!

MILEGALIZE CALLS ALL PETITIONERS TO THE CAPITOL STEPS ON MAY 20 FOR FINAL RALLY

PRESS RELEASE                                                                           FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MILEGALIZE CALLS ALL PETITIONERS TO THE CAPITOL STEPS ON MAY 20 FOR FINAL RALLY

Marijuana legalization petition drive is ending; rally and petitioner appreciation marked by contests, awards for petitions submitted

May 18, 2016/LANSING- The submission date for petitions to place ballot questions before voters during this year's general election is June 1, and the MILegalize group is calling for a final major rally at the Capitol Building in Lansing on May 20. The gathering will serve to round up all signed petition sheets from around the state, express gratitude for the efforts made by ordinary citizens in this extraordinary effort, and to provide direction for moving the campaign forward.

"Meeting with our volunteer army on the steps of the state Capitol Building is special, because that's where we launched the petition drive on June 25 of last year," said MILegalize Chair Jeffrey Hank. "We will submit our petitions to the state in a timely manner, and that means we have to have all the signed sheets returned to us so they can be processed before being handed over."

The campaign has been noted for its ability to gather supporters regardless of where the group decides to meet. MILegalize has conducted fundraisers or Town Hall-style meetings in Traverse City, Flint, Oscoda, Grand Rapids, Ann Arbor and Detroit, among others. The organization boasts of a "volunteer army" of more than 1,000 people from all walks of life and corners of the state.

"It's important to note that we are not done, and the job is not complete. People should not relax," Hank emphasized. "We have faced challenges from the legislature, from members of state government and from local officials; we are fighting right up until the very  last minute to get every signature and collect every dollar we can, because nothing is guaranteed. This means so much to the people."

To encourage a return on those petitions, several organizations are sponsoring prizes for petitioners. The largest number of verified signatures turned in by a single individual on May 20 will earn them $1,000, donated by The Sweet Leaf in Flint, and the Michigan chapter of NORML is offering $100 to the first ten people who turn in 500 valid signatures. A celebration in honor of the volunteers is scheduled for after the Capitol gathering; details will be announced during the rally.

Professional signature gathering experts have been collecting signatures on behalf of MILegalize for months now, augmenting the number of volunteer petitions received. The organization needs approximately 253,000 valid signatures to qualify for the November 2016 ballot.

MILegalize has received endorsements from a broad spectrum of celebrities, from entertainers such as Tommy Chong to sports heroes including NHL veterans Larry DePalma and former Detroit Red Wing Darren McCarty. Michigan State House Representative Jeff Irwin has circulated MILegalize petitions.

Both Representative Irwin and Mr. McCarty are expected to speak during the rally, as will several Board members and other community notables. The gathering begins at 2pm

MILEGALIZE HITS SIGNATURE MILESTONE, ANNOUNCES CAPITOL RALLY

PRESS RELEASE    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MILEGALIZE HITS SIGNATURE MILESTONE, ANNOUNCES CAPITOL RALLY

300,000+ signatures gathered in campaign to legalize adult use of marijuana in Michigan; major rally planned for May 20

 May 8, 2016

LANSING- The MILegalize organization has collected more than 300,000 signatures on petitions to legalize the adult use of marijuana in Michigan, said Chairman Jeffrey Hank, and petitioners are still on the streets collecting more until MILegalize turns in to the Bureau of Elections on June 1.

The campaign needs about 253,000 valid signatures on petitions in order to qualify for the ballot in November of 2016. "We have to overachieve that number," Hank said, "because we are sending a clear message that Michigan is ready to lead on civil rights, job growth, education, and better roads."

MILegalize must submit petitions by June 1. MILegalize announced a rally at the State Capitol Building to call together volunteers around the state, collect petitions and celebrate the efforts of the "volunteer army" that has come together during this historic campaign. MILegalize invites all Michigan voters concerned about Flint, Detroit Public School, good government, and other issues to rally in unity with MILegalize.

That rally is on May 20, from 2-4 PM and will be followed by a gathering in Lansing to celebrate with the campaign's top volunteers. Volunteers are encouraged to collect as many signatures between now and then so the campaign has time to process them, and the campaign will have more petitions and supplies for people to take home from the rally to petition hard for another 11 days. MINORML will provide a gracious bonus of $100 to the first 15 people to bring 500 or more valid signatures to the rally.

MILegalize is still collecting funds to support the petitioning process and essential upcoming costs. "It costs money to run an effective campaign of this scope," Hank explained. MILegalize has raised almost $990,000.00 so far, and is seeking to become a million dollar campaign this week. MILegalize is the only statewide cannabis reform campaign that is not funded by special interests and lobbying groups-- a fact the campaign is very proud of.

"We are independent. This is a true grassroots movement that stands for more than cannabis reform. We are citizens seeking common-sense policies and dedicated to preserving democracy in Michigan and making Michigan great," Hank said.

MILegalize verifies every signature for voter eligibility and checks for duplication, and has two professional signature collection firms out on Michigan streets gathering signatures that are able to increase production with adequate resources. There will be expenses through the process of submitting to the state, and afterward, as MILegalize prepares to start phase 2 of the campaign to educate Michigan voters, and will likely face opposition from those opposing job growth and civil rights.

MILegalize is hosting a fundraiser dinner/auction at the famous Dominick's in Ann Arbor. At auction will be cannabis memorabilia, a $3,000.00 growing package, classic poster art and much more. Also up for bids: Items signed by comedian/entertainer Tommy Chong and hockey greats Darren McCarty and Larry DePalma.

Both McCarty and DePalma will be attending the fundraiser in Ann Arbor, scheduled for May 11. The event runs from 6-10pm.

https://milegalize.nationbuilder.com/donate

It would be insane and stupid and wasteful beyond belief to lose this right at the moment when we could win it all – better  cannabis law reform than any other state in this country!

The Michigan election law is very clearly on our side, it does not need to be changed, and it appears that the legislature will not try to kill us.

We have one month left. It is all up to you. If you send money, as much as you possibly can, and get signatures we will win cannabis legalization the right way, and be in heaven on earth.

If you cannot gut it out and kick ass for one month, the month of May, then who are you? How could you call yourself a cannabis activist?

MILegalize has raised more than $925,000. With effort we can win this epic battle, and we could be easily lose it all.

Absolutely everyone of us must get 100 signatures or contribute $400 during May.
If you have any feeling of self-worth you will not fail.

This truly is it folks, in Michigan we can easily have cannabis freedom, or total disaster with our current legislature.

We have come so far – in one month we could be on the ballot and headed for total victory, ... better cannabis law than in any other state.

Please step up to the plate right now – money or signatures, nobody is too poor to get signatures – and if you are too busy to get signatures then you have $400 to give.

Thanks so much my brothers and sisters.
For the next 30 days absolutely nothing else matters except victory. It won't happen without you.

MILEGALIZE CAN WIN IT!! *ALL EYES ON SINBAD FUNDRAISER* - NEXT WEDNESDAY!!

The 4/20 fundraiser at the Russell Industrial Center (what an amazing place) was thrilling. Our speakers really let it rip and the crowd loved it.

The two  former hockey stars were amazing. They were both "enforcers" on the ice.
If an opposing player tries to hurt a member of their team the "enforcer" provided the punishment. This job takes a toll on a person.
Darren McCarty and Larry DePalma are both absolutely clear that they would be dead without the mercy and grace bestowed by our holy healing herb. DePalma said "I had the gun in my mouth three times". It takes bravery to come out like this!
HOWEVER, *WE DID NOT RAISE ENOUGH MONEY!!!*
WE ARE IN THE ASTOUNDING SITUATION WHERE WE COULD CLEARLY WIN THIS, AND HAVE THE BEST CANNABIS LAWS IN THE WORLD.
1) We need about 60,000 more raw signatures, and EVERY ONE OF US HAS TO GET SOME. Huge amounts of money are going out each week to two professional signature companies, BUT IT WILL STILL BE VOLUNTEER SIGS THAT WILL PUT US OVER THE TOP. *WE ALL NEED TO EITHER GET SIGS OR FIND SOMEBODY ELSE WHO CAN DO IT!!!* We have until the end of May.
2) One of our professional sig companies turned in 7000 sigs last week - and says that can do more. Clearly we ain't "blowin smoke" here, we OBVIOUSLY CAN WIN THIS IF WE GIVE CASH AND WORK HARD FOR 6 MORE WEEKS!!
3) We have a mini-army of BRILLIANT attorneys, planning every day. Our fearless great leader, Jeff Hank, has done extensive legal research, which proves that there never has been a hard 180 day requirement for signature gathering - and that this was fully understood when the rules were made.
All that matters now is SIGNATURES AND SINBADS!
NEXT WEDNESDAY, AT SINBADS IN DETROIT WE WILL  BE HAVING OUR BIGGEST FUNDRAISER YET. WE WILL HAVE  DELICIOUS
HORS D'OEUVRES AND A CASH BAR. A GREAT VENUE WITH AN OUTSIDE DECK LOOKING OVER THE DETROIT RIVER. - AND A FINE AUCTION. ADMISSION IS "ONLY" $100, BUT FEEL FREE TO GIVE MUCH MORE!
(PLEASE BRING A COOL ITEM TO AUCTION - AND MONEY TO BUY STUFF!)
WE WILL NEVER HAVE THIS CHANCE AGAIN. *YOU* MAKE THE DIFFERENCE! PLEASE, PLEASE - HELP US GRAB HISTORY BY THE THROAT AND MAKE IT CHANGE RIGHT NOW!
DETROIT DISPENSARIES NEED TO STEP UP BIG !!! Or soon they will be "toast".
***BE THERE***   please!

Many board members are finding another $1000 to give.
WE HAVE ABOUT 6 WEEKS OF LOVELY WEATHER TO GET THE JOB DONE!!
NOW IT IS COMPLETELY POSSIBLE!
PLEASE GIVE MONEY (through PayPal on the website), and/or COME TO THE FUNDRAISERS.
TWO PROFESSIONAL COMPANIES ARE PICKING UP THE PACE - BUT WE STILL NEED VOLUNTEER SIGNATURES AND **MONEY**.
*****SO IMPORTANT! - DO YOU KNOW ANYONE WHO COULD WORK FULL TIME...OR HALF TIME BETWEEN NOW AND THE END OF MAY??? PLEASE, WE NEED TO FIND PEOPLE.
COME TO THE UPCOMING FUNDRAISERS!  Get fired up - and get petitions!!
Please come to our fundraisers!    SEE YOU WEDNESDAY (OR SEND THAT DONATION)
